About gutter cleaning

Gutter Cleaning in South West London, Surrey and West Sussex.

Everything that lands on a roof eventually ends up in the gutter. Leaves, moss washed off the tiles, grit off the surface of the tiles themselves, and whatever the birds bring. It settles at the low end and around the outlet, and once it packs down, water stops getting away.

A blocked gutter does not usually announce itself. It works fine in light rain and only overflows in a downpour, which is exactly when nobody is standing outside watching it. The first thing most people notice is a damp patch on an inside wall, months later.

We clear the gutters out, clear the outlets, flush the downpipes through and check the joints and brackets while we are up there. If we find something starting to fail, we tell you then rather than leaving it for you to discover in the next storm.

A blocked gutter works perfectly until the day it matters.
How often?

How Often Your Gutters Need Clearing.

It depends on what is above them. Two questions give you the usual answer for your house.

1Trees near the house?
2How mossy is the roof?
Rough shape of the job

A few trees nearby and a roof with little or no moss: once a year is usually enough, ideally in late autumn once the leaves are down. We would tell you after the first clear whether that is right for your house.

Once a year, most likely.

Guidance, not a contract. We would rather tell you it needs doing less often than sell you visits you do not need.

Gutter Cleaning

What the Work Involves.

01

Gutters Cleared Out

Moss, silt and leaves taken out of the run rather than pushed along it towards the downpipe.

02

Outlets Cleared

The opening into the downpipe, which is where blockages form and where a quick look from the ground will not show you anything.

03

Downpipes Flushed

Run through to check the water is getting all the way to the drain, not stopping at a bend halfway down.

04

Debris Taken Away

It comes off the roof and leaves with us rather than going into a heap by the back door.

05

Joints and Brackets Checked

While we are up there. You get told what we found, whether or not you want it dealt with now.

06

Roof Edge Checked

Slipped tiles and lifting flashing are visible from a gutter ladder, so we look while we have the access.

Signs to look for

How to Tell You Need It Looked At.

01

Plants Growing in the Gutter

If something is rooted up there, the gutter has been holding soil and water for a long time.

02

Water Over the Edge in Heavy Rain

The classic partial blockage. Fine in drizzle, overflows in a downpour.

03

Staining Below the Gutter Line

Water has been coming over the front edge repeatedly, whether or not you have seen it happen.

04

A Mossy Roof

Moss lifts off the tiles and washes straight into the gutter. A green roof and a blocked gutter almost always arrive together.

Common questions

The Questions We Get Asked About Gutter Cleaning.

Once a year is the usual answer, and twice if you have trees close to the house or a mossy roof shedding onto the gutter. It is the cheapest job we do and it prevents the expensive ones, because overflowing gutters are behind a lot of damp walls and rotten fascias.

Late autumn, once the leaves are down, is the most useful single visit. It clears the gutter before the winter rain. If you are doing it twice, late spring catches the blossom and seed that comes off in early summer.

Ask us when you call and we will tell you how we would approach your property. Access, height and how much is in the gutter all change the sensible method, and we would rather explain it than promise one approach for every roof.

Plenty of people do at low level. The thing to be careful about is the ladder, because working at height is where the accidents happen, and a gutter ladder on soft ground or leaning on the gutter itself is how people come off. If it is above single storey, get someone with a proper platform.

Yes. Clearing the gutter and leaving a blocked downpipe just moves the problem, so we flush them through and make sure the water is getting to the drain.

We tell you what we found and what it would take to put right, and you decide. We are not going to start work you have not agreed to.

How it works

Four Steps From Your Call, to the Job Done.

01

You Call or Send the Form

Tell us your town and what you have noticed. A photo from the ground helps more than you would think.

02

We Come and Look

At the actual thing, where it is safe to get to it. You hear what has failed and what it takes to put right, in plain words.

03

You Get a Written Price

For the work we have described, with time to think about it. If there is a word on it you do not recognise, ask and we will explain it.

04

We Do the Work and Clear Up

Agreed dates before we start, and everything off the drive when we finish.
