New white uPVC fascia, soffit and guttering along the eaves of a bungalow
GUTTER REPLACEMENT

New Guttering,Hung to a Proper Fall.

When the plastic has gone brittle and the brackets are pulling out, patching stops being worth it. We take the old run off, make the timber good and hang a new one properly.

About gutter replacement

Gutter Replacement in South West London, Surrey and West Sussex.

Guttering does not last forever. uPVC goes brittle and chalky with years of sun on it, joints stop sealing, and brackets work loose as the fascia behind them softens. At some point you are repairing the same run twice a year, and a replacement stops costing more than the repairs.

A new run is only as good as its fall. Gutter has to drop steadily towards the outlet or the water sits in it, silt builds up in the flat spots and it overflows again within a couple of years. We set the fall properly rather than hanging the new run off the old bracket holes.

We take the old guttering down, look at what is behind it, replace any fascia that has gone soft, and hang the new run with the brackets at proper centres into sound timber. Downpipes, outlets, stop ends and the shoe at the bottom all get replaced to match.

Hanging new guttering on a rotten fascia just repeats the fault a year later.

What a new run includes

Everything a Gutter Replacement Should Come With.

Read down the list. If a quote you have been given misses any of these, ask why.

Full Runs in White uPVC

The standard replacement: new gutter, brackets, unions, stop ends and outlets across the whole run.

Matching Downpipes

Replaced at the same time so the whole system is the same age and the same profile, with the shoe directing water away from the wall.

Fascia Made Good First

Any soft or rotten board replaced before the new gutter goes up, because that is what the brackets screw into.

Correct Fall Set

The run drops steadily to the outlet, so water leaves rather than sitting in the low spots and silting up.

Deep-Flow Where It Is Needed

A bigger profile on roofs that shed a lot of water quickly, so the gutter is not overwhelmed in a downpour.

Awkward Corners and Returns

Bays, returns and the joins between different roof sections, which is where poor replacements usually go wrong.

Signs to look for

How to Tell You Need It Looked At.

01

The Plastic Is Chalky and Brittle

Years of UV. It will crack rather than flex, and clips snap when anyone touches them.

02

You Have Repaired It More Than Once

Two repairs on the same run in a couple of years is the point where replacement is the cheaper answer.

03

Brackets Are Pulling Away

The fascia behind has softened. That has to be dealt with, and while the gutter is down is the sensible time.

04

Joints Leak However Often They Are Sealed

Once the profile has distorted, sealant is a temporary fix at best.

What changes the price

Why Two Gutter Replacement Jobs Cost Different Things.

We give a written price for the work we have looked at. These are the things that move it.

01

How We Reach It

A bungalow off a properly secured ladder and a three-storey terrace needing a scaffold are two different jobs before anyone touches the work itself.

02

How Much of It There Is

Front only, front and back, or the whole property including the returns. We measure it rather than estimate from the pavement.

03

What We Find Underneath

If the timber or the mortar behind the visible part has gone, that has to be put right too, or the new work fails exactly the way the old work did.

04

Profile and Colour

Standard white half-round is one price; deep-flow, ogee, black or a cast-iron-effect profile are others. We quote for what you choose.

Common questions

The Questions We Get Asked About Gutter Replacement.

uPVC guttering generally has a long life, but sun, heat and cold gradually make it brittle, and the fixings and seals usually go before the gutter itself. Rather than guess at a number, look at the state of it: chalky, cracking plastic and joints that will not stay sealed are the signals, not the age.

Where the timber has gone, yes, and we would recommend it. The gutter brackets screw into the fascia, so hanging new guttering on a rotten board just repeats the fault. If the boards are sound we leave them and say so.

Usually. Tell us the profile (half-round, ogee, square or deep-flow) and the colour when you call, or send a photo. If we are only replacing part of a run it matters that the new section meets the old one properly.

Not necessarily, but it is usually worth it. If the gutter has reached the end of its life the downpipes are the same age and the same weather, and doing them together means one visit and one matching system.

Taking a run down brings years of silt and moss with it, so there is debris. We clear it as we go and take it away. You should be able to tell we have been by looking up, not by looking down.

For guttering, no. It is all worked from outside on a ladder or a scaffold. We only need access to the outside of the property and somewhere sensible to put the ladder or platform.
